Review
After applying these strategies for less than a month, my difficult teenage daughter is incredible. --Parent. Everything we tried in the past was making the situation worse. Now our intense child is intensely wonderful without medications. --Parent/Educator. This is absolutely the most worthwhile information I have ever learned. My hyperactive child is now my amazing child. --Parent/Therapist
I have read dozens of books, tried dozens of programs with no change in my child's behavior what so ever. This book has changed our lives! We started implementing the steps and the very first day we saw a change in our child. Life has become pleasant and peaceful without any compromises. Our child is helpful, considerate and no longer talks back. He does his chores before we ask him and his room has stayed clean for three weeks without any nagging!!!! I highly recommend this book to anyone with a difficult child! --Parent/Educator
Like many of my peers, I too want to do the best possible job raising my children. The desire to be respectful and supportive does not always involve consistent discipline, but it should! Anyone with a sensitive, loving child can benefit from this book. Any parent who feels like they have tried every trick in the book to promote good behavior in their children, but can't seem to gain compliance in their kids, will benefit from this book. I was recommended this book by our psychologist, whom we have been seeing because I ran out of coping strategies for dealing with my very sensitive, very smart, and very compliant child who seemed addicted to PUSHING MY BUTTONS!! Turns out, the very emotional responses I had to my child's poor behaviors, was promoting the very things I was trying to;punish away; Time outs escalated into screaming matches and made me feel like a drill Sargent, not very productive, and definitely not respectful or supportive! Transforming the Difficult Child has opened my eyes to; accentuate the positive; and;down play the negative; In short, shifting all of my aggravated tirades into positive reinforcement of GOOD behaviors. Within two weeks of implementing this style of attention, my 5 year old was more relaxed, more cheerful, more agreeable and happier than I had ever seen him. In turn, he was also less anxious, stopped a nervous habit of lip licking that had been with him for two years, and lots of chapped skin! He now knows that he is good MOST of the time, and only bad once in a while. I was failing to acknowledge his good behavior, because that is what we think of as; expected; but He was feeling as if he was always bad, because our energy was always spent on correcting bad behaviors. Please read this book if you recognize any of the above story, or if you know someone who is in constant power struggles with their children. This book has a simple, gentle, loving and supportive plan of action that will change your Family for the better, even if your child isn't difficult. After all, we all want someone to acknowledge our good behaviors, who better to do it than your parent!! --Parent

it just kept getting worse and worse and worse
By Amazon Customer
I was I was very skeptical of this book at first. I purchased it to take part in a summer reading club with others in my community and honestly I expected it to be butt kissing therapy. As a mother of four year old twins, one of them is incredibly challenging, I have up to this point taken a really hard stance on behavior and truly believed that eventually I would come across something that would motivate her to adjust her behavior. But, just as it says in the book, it just kept getting worse and worse and worse. This book really explains a method that I would never have even considered until I got well through chapter 1 and it was like I was reading a book about my own daughter. The philosophy makes sense if you have a child with a difficult kiddo, and I'm sure other parents of challenging children, maybe not all but definitely a vast majority good gain at least a little something here I believe. That being said, I have not had a chance to give any of it a try but it is nice for once to not have that pit in your stomach knowing that the research and literature that you need and that you've settled on this time it's still just left of center and while it's interesting and valid for the vast majority of more easily tempered children you know it's not going to work for your own challenging kiddo. I can say with absolute certainty that this is the first time I have ever read any parenting literature and not had that little seed of doubt. I have no idea how the techniques will work, but I have absolute certainty that Glasser has seen what I see everyday it makes me less afraid to hear her little feet hit the bedroom floor this morning, so even if none of the techniques work at all, that little bit of camaraderie that I got from reading the book was definitely worth it. If you have an extremely challenging kiddo on your hands I would definitely recommend this if for nothing else than for another angle from which to examine your next plan of attack, and best of luck to you, Brother. I'm just keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that 5 is easier than 4 over here. That's pretty much all I've got. :-)

Amazing concept, poorly written.....
By BookMom
This approach outlined in this book is fantastic. My child has impulse control issues, and we were being subtly pushed by his psychologist to consider medication. In a search for something else to try, I found this book. Bottom line: the method works extremely well, but only if you can slog through the book and pluck the gems needed to make it work. The book wastes endless pages selling its method. Believe me, if you're buying a book with a title like "Transforming the Difficult Child", you don't really need a sales pitch. You'd probably dye your hair green if you thought that it would help your child.
Actually, since the parents buying this type of book are probably at maximum stress level, the authors would do them the greatest favor by publishing this book as a stripped down how-to manual.

Very Helpful, Very Insightful
By Libby
This book was recommended for me from a family counselor. This has really helped me to understand different situations I come across and how to handle them. It has also taught me how to approach my child and go about things in a totally different way. I learned more about my child and what she is thinking. Me reading this book has helped me understand where her anger is coming from. I have put a lot of practice on what this book has said and let me tell you from experience, it does help. You do need to see things in a different way. This book has many examples of different families and situations and I saw myself in a lot of them. I am so glad I was told about this book and I do recommend it if you keep running into brick walls with your children
