The Mary Rose carried a crew of naval officers and sailors, a fighting force of gunners and soldiers, a Barber-surgeon, several ship's carpenters and skilled navigators. Of nearly 500 men, fewer than 40 survived the sinking on 19th July 1545. Trapped by netting, or below deck, they stood little chance, and their bodies and belongings went to the bottom of the sea. Excavation of the hull and contents produced a huge collection of objects that together make up a detailed picture of what life was like on board. Before the Mast explores how the men of the Mary Rose lived, through their surviving possessions; how they were fed; their music and recreation, medicine and provision for illness and injury, as well as working practices: carpentry and maintenance, stowage, navigation and ship's communications. The personal possessions of the crew included religious items, books, fishing lines and weights, sewing kits, money, hair combs, jewellery, knives, musical instruments and many items of clothing. The Barber-surgeon, who had his own cabin, brought on board a fine chest filled with canisters, bottles and pots of ointment and medicines, a variety of surgical instruments and a fine set of razors. Another cabin nearby was clearly occupied by the ship's carpenters whose toolkit included planes, adzes, axes, hammers and drills, as well as pitch pots and special mallets for patching up leaks in the ship's hull. The ship's navigators had the best in sixteenth century compasses. The ship's galley was in the hold and this area in particular produced many examples of wooden and pewter plates, bowls, pots, bread troughs, and tankards, as well as barrels and baskets still containing beef, pork, fish and fruit. The volume also includes an analysis of the human remains providing evidence for the stature and age range of the men most were under 30 their health, and injuries sustained.

I'm glad my husband doesn't snoop because the gift wrapping for this book doesn't even cover the book, plus it's ripped in several places. It appeared to be well-packed, too, so this was allowed off the packing line looking awful.

A book by a scholar for scholars

This is a book by a serious scholar that might be useful only to other very serious scholars. Those lacking a PhD in ancient Roman history may sometimes feel that each page contains more hair-splitting details than the page before it.

There are NO diagrams, pictures, photos, or illustrations.The vocabulary is sometimes intimidating. (I have a bachelor's degree; I'm a summa cum laude graduate. I've vacationed in Rome and Athens and enjoyed lectures given by scholars with PhD's in Ancient Roman Studies. However, I found Dr. Sage's vocabulary to be unnecessarily complex.)

Even the overviews expect the reader to have knowledge of the subject matter and the vocabulary.
Those who are looking for pleasurable reading should look elsewhere (perhaps to Roth's ROMAN WARFARE).
Those interested in near microscopic precision will admire this book.

Aristotle called "Oedipus The King," the second-written of the three Theban plays written by Sophocles, the masterpiece of the whole of Greek theater. Today, nearly 2,500 years after Sophocles wrote, scholars and audiences still consider it one of the most powerful dramatic works ever made. Freud sure did. The three plays--"Antigone," "Oedipus the King," and "Oedipus at Colonus"--are not strictly a trilogy, but all are based on the Theban myths that were old even in Sophocles' time. "Whether a mere man can know the truth"

These plays are part of the warp and woof of Western civilization. Two of them - "Oedipus the King" and "Antigone" - should be read by anyone who considers herself an educated citizen of the Western world. And once she has read those two, why not go ahead and read the third, "Oedipus at Colonus"?

Actually, one of the issues concerning the presentation, or reading, of these three plays is their order. In terms of the chronology of the Oedipus story, "Oedipus the King" is the earliest, followed by "Oedipus at Colonus" and then, lastly, "Antigone" (the events of which take place after the death of Oedipus). But Sophocles did not write the plays in that order. Rather, he wrote "Antigone" first, around 441 B.C.; "Oedipus the King" about twelve years later; and "Oedipus at Colonus", shortly before he died in 406 B.C. Those responsible for this edition chose to place them in the order in which they were written.

The plays are popularly called the "Theban plays", because they all concern the city-state of Thebes during and after the reign of Oedipus. In them, Sophocles wrestles with some of the core concerns of human existence - especially, fate versus free will - in as dramatic and wrenching a fashion as any playwright, even Shakespeare. In addition, "Antigone" poses questions concerning the limits (if any) of a citizen's obedience or subservience to the state. "Oedipus the King" is saturated with irony, more so than any other play I can think of. It also presents, compellingly, the question "whether a mere man can know the truth". And "Oedipus at Colonus" deals with matters of death and the possibility of influencing life after death.

This translation of THE THREE THEBAN PLAYS is by Robert Fagles, who also is the translator of the most popular renditions of Homer's "Iliad" and "Odyssey". Fagles favors comprehension and flow over rigorous fidelity to the original ancient Greek. The text is sprinkled with modern English colloquialisms such as "rumor has it", "no napping on the job", and "far be it from me". The result is a more accessible translation, one that certainly has much to commend it to those who are reading these classic plays for the first and in all likelihood only time in their lives. For myself, having refreshed my knowledge of the plays after having first read them about forty years ago, I want to read them yet again in a translation that is closer to the original Greek.

What most distinguishes this particular Penguin Classics edition, even more so than the Fagles translation, are the four essays by Bernard Knox. First, there is an eighteen-page essay on "Greece and the Theater", which provides an excellent, not-overly-academic introduction to Sophocles, the Oedipus story, and Greek drama generally. Then, for each of the specific plays, Knox contributes a separate twenty-plus page introduction. These are somewhat more detailed and remind me more of a college text. Nevertheless, they too are worthwhile - EXCEPT, in my opinion, they would be more rewarding if read AFTER reading the play in question rather than BEFORE.

There’s a pattern with many of these Greek tragedies. Through the sad tales of cursed families, they illustrate the evolution of Western civilization. Fifth-century Athens was a light in the dark, a young democracy, and the Athenians used tragedy as a tool to preserve history, learn from it, and document their growth. With The Oresteia, we saw Aeschylus tackle the ideas of law and respect for the state, and Sophocles continues along those lines, but places the focus on another great philosophical problem–free will vs. fate.

Though heady, the plays also had an entertainment value. The Spring festival celebrating Dionysus provided an opportunity for playwrights such as Sophocles to compete and put on a performance for thousands of spectators. Tragedies usually ran in the morning and the more lighthearted comedies toward the end of the day.

Being tragedies, lighthearted these three Theban plays are not. They adhere to the Greek tradition of dramatizing the lives of a cursed family, but instead of the House of Atreus, we gain a jagged view of humanity’s affliction through the House of Oedipus.

The first play, Antigone, is actually the last chronologically. Oedipus is dead, yet the curse continues. Thebes has defeated an onslaught of Argosian warriors, led by Polynices, the exiled son of Oedipus. He was killed, along with his brother, Eteocles. Antigone, daughter of Oedipus and sister of both Polynices and Eteocles, wants to bury the body of Polynices, but her uncle and Theban King, Creon, threatens anyone who does so with death. I think you can see where things are headed…

Next comes Oedipus the King, the shining star of the three plays–the painting within the frame. Each piece has its own beauty, but we move back in time to that dreadful moment of discovery. It’s through Oedipus’ actions that we see an evolution in Greek theater. The plot builds perfectly according to Aristotle’s Poetics and is the cornerstone of many a modern story. Oedipus represents the everyman, marching forward, thinking destiny is within his control, only to discover that he is a mere puppet to fate.

A plague has struck Thebes and the only solution is to bring the killer of Thebes’ last king, Laius, to justice. Through plot twists and turns, Oedipus dedicates himself to finding the killer, only to discover that he is the killer, and that he has fulfilled a prophecy which he has tried to avoid all of his life. The truth is too much. His wife and mother, Jocasta, kills herself, and Oedipus gouges out his eyes, his one act of defiant free will.

Finally, we are presented with Oedipus at Colonus. Many years have passed and Oedipus has become a wanderer, guided by the loyal Antigone. He finds himself in the town of Colonus, just outside of Athens. The oracular prophecy makes its next move: Oedipus has arrived in the place where he must be buried. This play is an ode to Athens, and by being buried just outside the city, it will be protected for all time.

Thus ends the Theban trilogy. Similar to my Aeschylus readings, I picked up the Robert Fagles translation. Sophocles’ writing flows easier and is less dense than that of Aeschylus, so if you had a tough time with The Oresteia, you may find Sophocles to be more in your wheelhouse. From Freud to soap operas, you’ll certainly begin to understand the many references to this bit of dramatic history.

The Absolute Best

I have read 4 different translations of the Theban plays and the Fagles translation is by far the best available. It reads flowingly. It has extensive notation. It has a fantastic introduction to Greek theatre and the evolution of the plays. The University of Chicago's Grene & Lattimore series is often cited as "the standard". But that series has only very cursory introductions and not to each play...there are no notes whatsoever and no glossary.
Fagles also translated the very best Homer of all time, IMO. His The Odyssey and The Iliad are excellent reading with wonderful introductions by Bernard Knox. I believe it is a truism that any work by Fagles will be top drawer.

Incredible detail of every facet of fabricating a watch

This book is amazing. I have just received the latest edition, and cannot believe the wealth of detail and knowledge presented by George Daniels. This book is a masterwork, by a master of his art.

It's not just for watchmakers; anyone interested in any kind of precision fabrication, metalworking, metal finishing, or tool making will find much of value in this book. Mr. Daniel's writing style is straight forward and to the point, no wasted words. You will feel as if he is watching over your shoulder, patiently instructing you in exactly what to do, how to do it, and why you are doing it.

The book provides a level of detail that is stunning in its completeness, from making your own precision tools and using them, machining the parts, making your own polishing and grinding compounds, all the way to engraving and finishing, and finishing with constructing and using apparatus to test the accuracy of a watch.

This is an extremely detailed and thorough treatise on how to design, fabricate, decorate, and test a watch. The only way to get a better education at watch fabrication would be to apprentice yourself to George Daniels.

Highly, I say again, HIGHLY recommended.

The best, but skip if you own the Third Edition

This is arguably the last word in watchmaking, generously and clearly written and illustrated to provide just about every practical piece of information you need.

I have owned the Third Edition for some time, and was very excited to see an update, especially in the wake of Mr. Daniels' passing in October 2011. I was disappointed to find that the only updates seem to be two color photos of Mr. Daniels, eight small photos of his shop from 2010, and the changing of "fifty years" to "sixty years" in the Acknowledgements. The Preface is still called "Preface to the Third Edition." The table of contents and index are also identical.

So, if you are one of those lucky ones who already own the Third Edition, you're probably better off saving your money. If you weren't able to obtain one, and are somehow living without this amazing tome, you owe it to yourself to buy it now.

Beautiful book!

If you are a horologist, you need and will treasure this book. If you need to google that term, you may very well enjoy this book for its masterful illustrations and precise diagrams. Some may even consider it a worthy coffee table book, although I think that's a role fit best by lighter reading with many more pictures.

Watchmaking is a rather technical guide that expects you to know the basic terminiology and 'anatomy' of the watch. It gives guidance for setting-up your workshop, acquiring the right tools/materials, and the processes for making a watch. By learning from the late George Daniels, you have a real opportunity to become a master timekeeper! To supplement your education you can find great stuff online and for repairs, look to Henry Fried's The Watch Repairer's Manual.

An excellent approach to the Namibian Culture

After reading it, I felt that I had just left Namibia. I could even visualize the places which the author was talking about. The impression that I had was that I was there at Dune 7 searching for the treasure with Janet and Karl. The story is awesome. It is impossible not to fall in love with it. The perfect mix of culture and love story. And, why not suspense? I do not want to play the spoiler role here, but the story has a surprising and an amazing end! Ms. Cristiane Krumenauer gave a great contribution to the Herero people and all the peoples that comprise the Land of the Brave - Namibia. Congratulations!

Can Anyone Deal With Fiona Madison?

Fiona Madison is one of the most obnoxious characters ever. Not very likeable at all. She's loud, ignorant and her disrespect toward her mother is unforgiveable. The way she swaggers and constantly refers to herself in the third person is kinda funny (I guess), but it's very hard to sympathize with her.
