best hard-boiled collection

Dashiell Hammett's _The Big Knockover_ is a wonderful collection of stories by the master of the crime novel himself. The introduction by Lillian Hellman gives the reader excellent insight into her relationship with Hammett, as well as a glimpse of the author. For Hammett fans, the book is nearly worth the price for Hellman's introduction alone.
This collection is better than his Maltese Falcon, all the Sam Spade, and the Thin Man stories. Among Hammett's writings, the only novel to equal this collection, in my mind, is _Red Harvest_.
Stories in this book range from short to near-novella length. Topics range from the very typical Hammett plot (young woman is missing, wealthy dad pays for her return)of "The Gatewood Caper" to the offbeat noir-Western "Corkscrew" to the looting of an entire island ("The Looting of Couffignal").
The one "straight" story in the bunch, not a crime story at all, is "Tulip," published as a fragment. As it is, it doesn't pull much weight. To call the plot meandering would be generous.
The title story is a classic. A big bank-robbery caper starts looking bizarre when, days later, roomsful of America's highest profile crooks start turning up dead.
One bad story doesn't ruin the whole bunch. If you're a fan of Hammett's other books, give _The Big Knockover_ a chance.

Classic Adventures of the Indomitable Continental Op.

"The Big Knockover" is a collection of 10 short stories, 9 of which originally appeared in "Black Mask" or "Mystery Stories" magazines, 1923-1929, and feature Dashiell Hammett's famous hard-nosed, always unnamed Continental Op detective. Several of these stories find the Continental Op out of his usual element in far-flung or exotic locales. "The King Business" takes place in a fictional Balkan nation of Muravia, of all places, and involves a political coup. "Corkscrew" is so named after an Arizona desert town, complete with cowboys, where the Op has been sent to break up an illegal immigration operation. The Op's adventures with the customary mode of transportation -horses- provides some comic relief. "Dead Yellow Women" takes place in San Francisco's Chinatown, where the mysteries of this immigrant culture prove confusing for the very American detective. I was surprised to see a Hammett detective in these unusual environments, but was entertained to find that there are thugs and grifters everywhere in Hammett's stories. The Op is never really out of sorts. He may not speak the language, but he's always at home in the criminal underworld. "The Gutting of Couffignal", "Fly Paper", "The Scorched Face", and "The Gatewood Caper" are more conventional Hammett, revolving around the debauchery of lowlifes and the dirty laundry of the wealthy. "The Big Knockover", after which the book is named, and "$106,000 Blood Money" are a two-parter about a spectacular caper in which an army of 150 crooks hold up an entire San Francisco city block and its aftermath. "Tulip" is the odd story out. It is the beginning of an unfinished novel that Hammett started late in life. It is unlike any work that Hammett published. The story concerns two older men, both educated and literate, both with criminal pasts. One is a writer who is working on a book. The other consciously rejected the literate lifestyle many years before, but is always anxious to tell his own story. It isn't very good. The style is tortuous and difficult to follow, the opposite of Hammett's typical lean, direct prose. "Tulip" appears to be an almost ridiculously overt allegory of the author's inner struggles with the value of words versus actions and the meaning of telling stories.
"The Big Knockover" was edited by Dashiell Hammett's longtime companion, the playwright Lillian Hellman, who wrote the introduction to the book in 1965, 5 years after Hammett died. She affectionately describes how they met, their relationship, how he died, and provides some insight into Hammett's personality from someone who knew him well. It's worth reading. "The Big Knockover" is a solid collection of Hammett stories featuring the wry, indomitable Continental Op. Dashiell Hammett was one of the 20th century's best short story writers, and, apart from "Tulip", which is a curiosity, this is classic Hammett and well worth reading whether you are new to Hammett or already a fan.

Irresistible stories, expertly selected & introduced by Lillian Hellman. More compelling even than the other Hammett short stories collection, "The Continental Op" - which features a more conventional foreword & introductory remarks. Stories here are of a great variety, also of a wide timespan; and one of the best, I think, is the one "straight" story in the volume, 'Tulip': this is less hard-boiled than fascinating (if left in a fragmented form). All in all, one of the 20th century classics - not just in terms of classic mysteries, but of world literature; it can certainly compete with Hammett's finest novels such as "The Glass Key" or the similarly offbeat (since humorous) "The Thin Man".

About the Author

I hope you can handle the truth about baseball

Bill Deane has spent more than two decades digging into baseball history, and this fascinating book is the end result. Tackling nearly 100 myths from the origin of the game, to the development of umpires' signals, to the integration of the major leagues, to the role of the modern bullpen closer, he takes nothing for granted and accepts nothing that cannot be documented. There's something for everyone here--from the casual fan who wonders whether Babe Ruth really did "call his shot" before his famous 1932 World Series home run, to the aficionado who wonders whether it really is more dangerous to slide head-first. Some of Deane's answers are statistical, others anecdotal, some simply a matter of letting us know just because a hundred announcers have told us that a certain event happened, it may not necessarily be true. You will be surprised, entertained, and most of all enlightened about the real history of our favorite sport.

Bright funny and wildly romantic

I loved this book, it is one of the funniest and most wildly romantic of Hart's marriage of convenience-style romances. This is about Deborah who is travelling in Indonesia when her belongings are all stolen. She is in a bit of bind already but now is even more so! Luckily - or unluckily Gil, an engineer who is living and working there is passing at the time and reluctantly helps her out.

To cut a long story short his fiance Debi has refused to come out to stay with him and he needs someone to help him with the work, and due to circumstances she needs to be married to him, in short, he needs a wife - a sensible wife.

Deborah really is not a sensible wife at all but she is prepared to try, only trouble is she doesn't really do what she is supposed to, she is hopeless at office work and typing and filing and all Gil seems to dois look at her in a disapproving fashion.

However Deborah is an enormously agreeable character and very easy to like and enjoy. You can see how the love grows between them. This very much reminds me of a Georgette Heyer romance. It has bright sparkling dialogue and good fun characters.

This book was an enjoyable read. I liked that the relationship development between the main characters. It was not an intense attraction at first sight but it grew overtime. Particularly refreshing was that it took a while before the relationship became sexual although there were mild intimate moments leading up to the sex. The pacing of the story was good and the minor characters complimented the main characters in a balanced way. I would recommend this book.

Comprehensive and Open

I can't imagine a better introduction to students of Organizations. The writing is clear, and assumes no background knowledge (I had none). Yet it is a deeply informative and thought-provoking book. A friend of mine in the M&O PhD program at Michigan (Davis' home department) says that you could pass preliminary exams if you memorized (*really* memorized) everything in the book. Unlike most textbooks, Scott and Davis actually locate the "perspectives" in current conversations.

Really Understanding Organizations

I really appreciate that book. That got me excited about teaching my Organization Theory class. What I like the most about it is that it does give a very good overview of where we stand in terms of the organizational form as such. It also provides some interesting food for thought in terms of the implied goals and actually carried-out functions of organizations that kept me (and still keep me) ruminating about some of the material and how it affects our daily lives. Additionally, because of the prominence of organizations in our society, the book can be informative in many different ways (including understanding better our economy and some of the conflicts we experience on a daily basis). I wonder about the interpretation of the current social and economical landscape that the authors could offer. There is a good summary discussion at the end with thoughts about current and future organizational (societal) issues. The style of the book, however, is not a bestseller popular style; it is definitely more academic than popular press.

Become a (sorta)instant (sorta)expert on organizations! In one book!

I came to this text with very little organizational theory background but this text really shored up that front of things. It's written concisely, if you have trained yourself to gloss over citations, of which there are many, but this is a graduate level text so you better get used to citations. The text nicely borrows across the theoretical disciplines contributing to organizational theory: management, industrial psychology, sociology, etc. It's a textbook but it's almost like reading the primary texts because it directly refers to and compares different theories and empirical studies.

Oh, and I took the course with Davis himself, really fun guy, his humor does show through in some portions of text.

I only gave it 4 stars because of how thin the paper is. But other then that it was the perfect thing for me. My kitchen is done in cupcakes and teapots. My friend and I enjoy getting together and having tea. So other then the pages this is a lovely coloring book. Thanks Sue Messruther!!

Not what I hoped it was.

It's hard to tell what a coloring book is like if you can't see the pictures beforehand. I will add photos later. The art seems more like a kids coloring book as there is little detail compared to other books I have bought, such as the Creative Haven books. The paper is thin.

An excellent overview of late 19th-century Vienna's unique social and cultural situation. The ascendancy and sudden decline of the liberal political class to forces of nationalism and economic inequality and protest seem frighteningly similar to today.

Just like a time machine!

Reading Schorske is like riding a time machine to Vienna around the tumultuous late 1800s to 1900. He covers an electic array of topics. However, he has a central focus: to show the radical changes and interconnection between arts & politics at the turn of the century vienna (fin de siecle). But, be warned, Schorske is an intellectual historian, and though his exposition is easy to read, his themes are academic and copiously detailed.

Schorske first lays out the setting of a growing city. He describes the monumental architectural project of the Ringstrasse (the Ring Street around central Vienna) and the rising liberalism and shifting wealth this represented.

The more interesting, and key, episode of the book involves the reactions to this change in Austria, in the form of new politics, anti-semitism, Zionism, and of the ramifications in Arts, Sciences and Music. Specifically, Schorske writes about transformations of viennese politicians, medical doctor Sigmund Freud, artist Gustav Klimt, and musician Arnold Shoenberg. The "vignettes" of these figures are academic and marvelously entertaining. What's surprising is how closely these key figures in 20th century intellectual development were connected; Vienna was a small city, after all. As I said, you'll feel like you're walking through the bustling streets of Vienna, and spotting Freud or Mahler (though Schoerske doesn't cover Mahler) on a leisurely stroll.

A Psychoanalytic View

I like this book! It gives me endless ruminations and thought out insights using the work of psychoanalysis to explain and explicate the subject matter- Vienna at the turn of the last century. This fits extremely well considering that psychoanalysis erupted form that very place at that very time. The life of Vienna, in its myriad forms, can be well understood via psychoanalysis - in many ways modern Vienna too is still a psychoanalytic trove - this book needs slow and careful reading; it will need more than one "going-over". Highly recommended - but if you are opposed to psychoanalysis...keep away! Be warned!
