About the Author
Jes Battis is an associate professor of English at the University of Regina. His teaching and research focus on intersections between fantasy and sexuality as they occur across a number of historical periods, including the middle ages and the eighteenth century. He is also the author of the Occult Special Investigator series, with Ace Books.

Susan Johnston is an associate professor of English at the University of Regina in Saskatchewan, Canada, where her courses include George R.R. Martin, J.K. Rowling, and literary historiography and theory.

A Great Game of Thrones Read

The collection of essays analyzing our favorite series is a great example of how deep you can go exploring your top shows...and the credits, fan art, language, screen angles, texts, and much much more.

The essays are creative and marvelous. David J. Peterson, creator of Dothraki, explains Martin’s vision of High Valyrian, like Latin, feeding the languages that followed it. While examining the problems with many fantasy languages, he tells the story of his creating Dothraki through the extensive, step-by-step process. This is a must for other creators of fictional languages and worlds.

Brian Cowlishaw’s “What Maesters Knew: Narrating Knowing” looks at the subtle controllers of Westeros and their careful plan to stamp out magic. Power/knowledge as a force can be wielded with great force to change the foundations of society when applied properly. Meanwhile, Marc Napolitano analyzes Martin’s book series from a structuralist and post-structuralist perspective, exploring the tension between narrative and discourse in the complex point of view – often the characters with the agency of narration are still the most helpless or unaware of others’ plans for them. Meanwhile, foreshadowing is cleverly dropped for the reader, but rarely in a way to aid any of the characters.

While many topics like chivalry have already been explored in other collections, Michail Zontos takes a unique angle and compares Game of Thrones to a Western with the savages deep in the wilderness and the lords of civilization venturing out, weapons blazing. In almost as large a leap, Jessica Walker compares Martin to Shakespeare – particularly the Henry and Richard plays – not only as retellings of Martin’s inspiration, the War of the Roses, but also as fictional interpretations of the actual events. ""All men must serve": Religion and Free Will from the Seven to the Faceless Men" by Ryan Mitchell Wittingslow compares many belief systems but above all the issue of human choice – which religions truly free their people and which enslave them?

As Karin Gresham says it herself in “Cursed Womb, Bulging Thighs and Bald Scalp: George R.R. Martin’s Grotesque Queen”: “Bakhtin’s theory of grotesque realism provides an effective lens through which to consider how the depiction of Dany redefines the heroic, transforming her into a character who integrates and expands gender, culture, sexuality, and even humanity, who accepts and absorbs all sources of strength and power, so that she emerges as a likely candidate for the throne of Westeros.” Many fans have observed horrific descriptions of several female bodies, from the queen in the historic Dance of the Dragons to Circe. Here, however, Gresham highlights Daenerys as a figure of strength nonetheless.
Sex and the Citadel: Adapting Same Sex Desire from Martin’s Westeros to HBO’s Bedrooms by David C. Nel explores the differences of sexual depiction in books and show, while Andrew Howe’s “The Hand of the Artist” celebrates fan art in the world of online fandom. Including the contrasts between Dany art and Jon art. This serves to immortalize a perfect moment of fandom. Zoe Shacklock also tackles adaptation, in this case, the transmedia nature with online trailers and games as well as the famed credits.

Better than the Others

I can't help it. I love to buy these books especially for Game of Thrones which so let me down this season.

There's never much to say but I will say that of all the thrones essays that I've read book, show, comparing them both this book was definitely the best of them.

I did have some issues with some of the essays like "Sex and the Citadel," which talked about the portrayal of Loras and Renly. I'm not a fan of how Loras is portrayed in the show especially compared to the book.

Also there's a couple of things about the "Grotesque Queen," that bothered me. The author seems to be comparing Dany and Sansa, unfavorably for poor Sansa. She talked about the mention of their first blood and how their lineage is treated and Dany's being more special than Sansa's but I thought that was questionable considering the mention's of Dany's first blood being a good thing are coming from Ilyrio who is about to sell her off while we see the same from Sansa's point of view knowing that know she's going to be forced into marriage. Anyway maybe I'm just too much of a Sansa apologist but I would think if nothing else for their blood and lineage their both treated pretty much the same.

Still this really is the first book of Thrones essays that I thought even bothered to go deeper. I appreciated it for that alone.

DC was never ruled by such queens before Ms. Wayne

Being born in DC and raised in MD reading this book was beyond a treat. I knew the streets by name as they were mentioned in the book and I was able to visualize the very scene being read. Miss Wayne and The Queens of DC is not be underestimated.

While this book appears to be solely about the flamboyant, loving, witty, snappy and compassionate drag queen all "Black & Ugly" fans have come to love it was SO much deeper than that.
It takes you into the worlds of many homosexual men who live "the life daily" it so much deeper than designer bags, beat faces, stuffed bras and padded panties. This is about who these people are and just that, that they are indeed PEOPLE. They have feelings, lives, families and just like everyone else they endure pain, heartbreak, betrayal and secrets. With every page there is a twist and turn beyond the readers expectations.
Along with Miss Wayne fan favorites are revisited in roles of: Parade, Jay, Daffany and Officer D. Hurts. There are even a few scenes where the often hated yet loved Skyy is mentioned through form of flashbacks. These very flashbacks take you deeper into the life and past of Wayne you see the very experiences in life that shaped and molded him into the fabulous queen he is today. You learn why he is so compassionate yet so cutting when need be.

While reading this book respect for the gay and transgendered community multiplied I was taken into their world given a glimpse of what life is like for those so different from us yet so similar. I gave this book 5 stars because it was more than a fictionalized depiction of a gay mans life. It was about mans life PLAIN and SIMPLE. While he is gay and dresses as a woman he is still a man and still HUMAN above all else. It appears often in today's society we look at men and women of a different lifestyle and we form this misguided and misunderstood opinions of them. Granted this is a fiction novel I am well aware of that but I read T. Styles blog and it was mentioned she consulted men of this lifestyle for research for this book. That research is so evident especially in the Metropolitan area. I give much love and respect to the author that is killing the urban literature scene right now. T. Styles. She has written another realistic urban tale that so many people can relate to: Straight, gay, lesbian, transgendered, bi-sexual, CONFUSED whatever you may be, unless you are just closed minded and overly critical (in which case you clearly should not have picked up a book with a drag queen on the cover) this book has something for everyone and is enjoyable for any lifestyle you are living if you are a lover of urban fiction.

Kudos to T. Style on a job AMAZINGLY done.

OMG!! I LOVE MS. WAYNE, SHE IS FAB!

First off I have waited for this book for a long time and I was sooo happy when I finally got it. Miss Wayne from Black and Ugly As Ever is back and he is fierce. Not only did T. Styles dive into Ms. Wayne's life, but she let us know what was up with Parade and Daffany! I LOVED it! From front to back this book was like that. T. Styles gotta do Ms Wayne & the Queens of LA, I need MORE!! EXCELLENT!

Highly recommended!

I tried several books to start learning FEM but was never satisfied. Some of them were overloaded with theory or essentially no theory and all software application. Finally I come across this one! A very good book to learn FEM subject for the person who already has basic knowledge of mechanics, strength of materials and matrix calculus. It's really clearly written with a very good and detailed explanation of discussed topics. All the chapters are followed by numerous examples to be solved by the reader. I was able to deal with them using the equations and examples given in regular text. The book is "software-independent" - it's not oriented towards any specific FEM package; more stress is put on general FEM theory and exemplary applications. There are several handy appendixes which helps you work through matrix calculus, equations of elasticity & solution techniques for linear algebraic eqs. Highly recommended!

I hate this book.

This is one of the most difficult textbooks to read that I've ever encountered. I think some of that has to do with the fact that the material is hard to begin with, but even still: The book constantly references equations by number (eq 5.14) and does so dozens of pages removed. That alone is super obnoxious.

Dr. Hutton was my professor for M.E. 474 [Finite Element Analysis] elective counting towards a Masters in Mechanical Engineering. We worked off his notes in 1992 before he got his work published. Brilliant man and no less quality of technical publication.

RIP Dr. Hutton.

About the Author
IAN L. McHARG was the founder of and is professor emeritus in the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning at the University of Pennsylvania. Known as the father of ecological planning, his landmark design projects include The Woodlands, Texas, and Amelia Island, Florida. Professor McHarg has received numerous honorary degrees and awards, including The National Medal of Art, presented by President Bush in 1990.

Significant Book for Architects - Though a Little Slow

While it's not the kind of book you want to lounge around the fireplace reading, it is a book that is frequently referred to by architects. It is significant in designing and ecologially friendly building in today's built-up environment. Summary: Not a great book, but a useful resource for architects.

Before GIS There Was McHarg

Ian McHarg's Design with Nature revolutionized landscape planning just at the time when the modern built environment was being recognized for its devastating effects on natural systems. McHarg devised techniques for planners to envision not just the finished product of human development, but its complex interaction with watersheds, wildlife habitat, viewscapes and anything else that could be represented as a layer on a map. Fast forward to today....Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are complex databases that organize information into the "layers" that McHarg proposed. GIS analysis has found its way into urban planning, oil spill response, wildfire management, epidemiology, endangered species management, socio-economic analysis and many other forms of spatial planning and design. Maps that are products of GIS analysis are digital versions of the tissue and mylar overlays of McHarg's vision and technique. This book is essential reading -- not because planners aren't using its ideas (almost universally, with GIS, they are) but because they don't understand GIS's debt to McHarg's pioneering thinking.

About the Author
PF Fox PhD DScPatrick Fox is Professor Emeritus of Food Chemistry in University College, Cork, Ireland.  His research over the last 55 years has focussed on dairy chemistry and biochemistry with emphasis on milk proteins and enzymes.  He is the editor or author of a large number of publications which have become highly cited.
PLH McSweeney PhD DScPaul McSweeney is Professor of Food Chemistry in University College, Cork, Ireland.  The overall theme of his research is dairy biochemistry with particular reference to factors affecting cheese flavour and texture.  He is the co-author or co-editor of a number of books on dairy chemistry and cheese science in addition and research papers and reviews.
T.P. Guinee, PhDTimothy P. Guinee is a Principal Research Officer in Food Chemistry and Technology at Teagasc Food Research Centre, Moorepark, Fermoy, Cork, Ireland and adjunct professor at University College Cork. His interests include the study of the rheology and functional properties of composite high protein food matrices, and the exploitation of these properties in food manufacture and assembly/formulation, with particular emphasis on gels and cheese-based systems. 
T.M. Cogan, PhDTimothy Cogan  is an emeritus Senior Principal Research Officer at the Moorepark Research Centre, Teagasc, Fermoy, Ireland and emeritus professor in the Department of Food Microbiology, University College Cork. His main Research interests during his research career were starters and the microbiology of cheese and butter, particularly lactic butter.

Blinded by Science

Very in-depth book on cheese-making. This is for the professional who is trying to learn the intricacies of milk, and cheese-making. A thorough background in biology and chemistry is needed. I have a year of so, of both, with a little micro (3-4 years ago), and I'm struggling to read this book, half of which I really don't understand. Have never made cheese, but want to make it well when I do make my first pound or two.

In the end, don't buy this book if you're not a biology science major interested in milk and cheese, if you need to know what makes milk and cheese tick, I'd have to say this book is for you.

Broad and very scientific reference book. Should be on every book shelf of dairy lovers/experts. Extremely useful for students, teachers, professional and anybody interested in cheese.
