La lectura puede ser mala: me he quedado sin galletas por su culpa... :)

Un texto muy técnico y profesional, con devastadora evidencia respecto a que la pandemia de obesidad y el aumento de casos de demencia senil y Alzheimer están vinculadas a quien creíamos un aliado en la alimentación: el trigo. Sea en pan, pastas, galletas o incluso como aditivo en champús o cosméticos, contribuye más de lo que creíamos en inflamar el cerebro -así como los intestinos y las articulaciones-. Y si se asocia su consumo con azúcar y otros carbohidratos refinados, es una combinación mortal.

El mayor efecto de la lectura de este libro fue decidirme, de una vez por todas, a suspender la ingesta de pan y galletas -alimentos que eran básicos para mi- y perderle el miedo a los huevos y ciertos aceites. Si todo marcha bien y me apego al plan de 30 días, creo que veré diferencias importantes. A menos de cinco días de hacerlo, empiezan a notarse cambios fundamentales.

El texto merece cuatro estrellas porque la parte técnica domina la gran mayoría y, si bien no es altamente complejo, tampoco es para un público lego. Incluso con algunos referentes médicos ya conocidos, hubieron partes en que costaron trabajo. También la parte de las recetas podría ser mucho mejor trabajada, así como la presentación del plan de 30 días. Pensé que ocuparía una parte sustancial del texto, y es apenas uno de los diez capítulos.

Aún así, es una lectura muy recomendable y que en verdad puede transformar tu vida. O, al menos, volverte loco con la posibilidad de contraer demencia senil al acabar una dona o tres galletas...

Interesting at the begining, not very helpful for the average economies. Not healthy to read this.

Too repetitive. The diet feels somewhat unreal to follow because, basically if we can't afford the food recommended (the specific oil alternatives, meat from cows fed with grass,etc.) ....we are doomed ...is what I am getting from this book.

And the author goes over and over and over with the death sentence. It would be more than enough to say: 'gluten is bad, this book is not about gluten but I am going to mention it every 4 or 5 pages or less.... ' . Diabetes is bad, sugar is bad, fruit is bad, vegetables are bad, eggs are questionably probably good.... ... ok, we get it. .... What else? It looks like the author spends more chapters than needed trying to convince about what he is probably not very sure either, but that is my perception.

And I haven’t finished the book but I am already feeling sick of it. Before starting this reading I recommend to prepare and have the open mind and mood needed to read a book about the end of the world. I am giving 3 stars because I found kind of informative some of these facts, studies and the very depressing verdict.

Interesante y atrapante. Una buena lectura para entender los efectos que tienen el azúcar y las harinas en nuestra salud. La importancia de las grasas para nuestro cerebro es otro aspecto a destacar. Resulta un poco controversial la propuesta nutricional que plantea al final, ya que la misma la realiza y trata de fundamentar en observaciones propias, se contrapone a los efectos estudiados con procedimientos científicos y válidos en cantidades estadísticamente hablando, en los cuales una dieta alta en grasas animales y proteína animal se relaciona a muchos problemas de salud. Deja afuera, sin tratarlas en el texto, dietas comprobadas como excelentes, incluso para problemas como Alzheimer y Arterioesclerosis múltiple, como lo es la "Plan Based Diet". Tampoco tiene recomendaciones si eres vegetariano o vegano.

He is¿ currently a Consulting Professor in the Design Division of Mechanical Engineering. He received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 1992. Prior to that, he received an M.S. in Bio-Medical Engineering from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1978. His B.S.E. was awarded from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1975, where he was a member (1/3) of the first graduating class of the Education and Experience in Engineering (E 3)program.

Dr. Carryer's industrial experience varies wildly, from designing water treatment facilities for coal and nuclear power plants for Sargent & Lundy to designing the electronic controller for an Arctic Heated Glove under contract to NASA. He spent eight years in the Detroit area working in and about the auto industry. During that time he worked for Ford, GM and AMC on electronic engine control systems, predominantly for turbo-charged engines. He has an active design consultancy that has tackled such varied projects as an engine controller for an outboard motor manufacturer, an automated blood gas analyzer, and a turbo-charger boost control system for a new type of turbo-charger.

Matt Ohline is an Associate Consulting Professor in the Design Division of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University.

Thomas Kenny is a Professor in the Mechanical Engineering department at Stanford University. Dr. Kenny received his PhD in Physics from UC Berkeley.

Dr. Kenny's research group is researching fundamental issues and applications of micromechanical structures. These devices are usually fabricated from silicon wafers using integrated circuit fabrication tools. Using these techniques, the group builds sensitive accelerometers, infrared detectors, and force-sensing cantilevers. This research has many applications, including integrated packaging, inertial navigation, fundamental force measurements, experiments on bio-molecules, device cooling, bio-analytical instruments, and small robots. Because this research field is multidisciplinary in nature, work in this group is characterized by strong collaborations with other departments, as well as with local industry.

Great, and mostly likely will continue to be

This is a great overview on the electrical engineering part of mechatronics! I assume it is equally good for the mechanical and programming parts, but so far I've only focused on the electrical. I could probably give a better review at the end of the semester...

I used Grevisse in learning and teaching French in high school and as a correspondence course instructor and later teaching (mostly) engineering undergraduates. But where it was truly indispensable to me was in translating and interpreting the (in)famously difficult and often poetic texts of the equally (in)famous genius of 20th century psychoanalysis, literary criticism, and philosophy (to name just three areas of his great influence), Dr Jacques Lacan. With the help of Grevisse, I was able to complete my Ph.D thesis (The Language of the Self, ©1968 anthony wilden). Lacan was pleased enough with the accuracy and depth of the English version and notes and commentary that he sought to have the text translated into French with the title Lacan et le discours de l'Autre. Without all those years studying Grevisse, I would never have been able to create this book. The latest edition is superb! I pay homage to the many great French and other scholars like Grevisse who sent us on our way and kept us such good company.

Great fundamental book, but REALLY bad version

I had the second edition of Porter and Easterling and lost it between moves. I thought the new edition would be updated and have some great new information in it. I was REALLY wrong. The new author has removed some good information that was in the previous edition and the errors in this edition are appalling. Equations are derived incorrectly or the final equation is wrong. It is clear that no one went through this new edition and edited it. If you are going to purchase the book, I would recommend getting the second edition. I am not sure if the end of the chapter problems are the same, but it really isn't worth buying. I wish I could return this and buy the second edition.

Lacking depth and some areas were copied from Reed-Hill & Shewmon

We used this textbook for a graduate level course.

My first observation was that a lot of the content in this book was copied from other sources without directly giving credit to the original authors. One example is where Reed-Hill credits an original paper whereas these authors just copied it from Reed-Hill and omitted the citation. There are other examples where they copied content directly from Shewmon.

As mentioned above, some content is copied from other sources and this wouldn't be as bad if it weren't for the fact that in most cases they copied the end result without fully explaining the concepts behind it. This can take a lot of your time away from you if you try to derive a formula on your own. I was usually forced to refer to other books when I found myself having a hard time understanding a section or a formula. Sometimes an attempt at an explanation is made but it is not sufficient to explain how the author arrived at the formula or concept. If you are accustomed to textbooks that show you how formulas are derived, this isn't the textbook for you. To make matters worse, some formulas throughout the book are incorrect (and its the 3rd edition!).

The arrangement of the book can sometimes get confusing and you often have to backup and re-read sections to make sure that you are not mixing concepts. I often had to go back to other textbooks and read their sections on a subject and then re-read this book (and then it finally made sense).

For my kinetics of phase transformations course, which was very rigorous, I had to suplement this book with other textbooks: Physical Metallurgy Principles by Robert E. Reed-Hill & Reza Abbascian, Diffusion in Solids by Paul Shewmon, and various research papers or lecture notes to fully understand all of the concepts.

Simply the best guide to wilderness meteorology you can get

Weathering the Wilderness is essential reading for backpackers,skiers and mountaineers. In layman's terms this book explans the weather phenomenon that can effect your well-being in the outdoors. This book also contains detailed climatic data for eight reagons of North America. When planing trips to other areas of the country this information is very usefull. Want to know the typical waether patterns and average rainfall for August on the Olymic Peninsula? Just look it up. Want to know more about microclimates and how they effect mountain weather, read this book. This will be a referance book that you will use time and again, season after season. And even if you never venture out of the house this is a great book for the amateur meteorologist.

Exploring After the End

I purchased this book for my daughter, Sarah. She wrote in it and underlined words and left it a rag tag mess. After she passed away in a car accident when she was 16, I loved flipping through the pages seeing her thoughts and observations.

How to "Be" Guide for Artists

Smith's newest book is the most recent installment in her passionate, ongoing process to distill life and the art process (indistinguishable to most artists) down to it's bare matter. If you can embrace playfulness, open courageously to the idea of art as life, are willing to turn off the television and look around you, love to challenge yourself to learn to BE and create from essence as opposed to trend or fancy, Explorer is for you.

As an author, she seems to live her life exactly the way she writes (as one can easily pick up when visiting her blog The Wish Jar Journal).

As an artist, she is apparently very well read on the subjects of art and life and willing to push beyond art school rules to find her own voice among so many artsy voices that seem to blend together these days. For an insightful, modern perspective on gathering the fodder to create amazing experiences, I was not disappointed with this book.
I completely disagree with other reviews which state that this book is not for deep thinkers. I find her simple, freshened concepts to be timely and revolutionary, just what artists have been missing from our creative processes.
I also recommend Wreck This Journal and Guerilla Art, also by Keri Smith.

How to Be Inspired

This book encourages collecting -- you'll start a collection of things you find on the ground, things you overhear, things that simply interest you and you've got no real use for. And through these collections, and the arranging and documentation of them, Keri Smith will teach you how to look at the world with new eyes. Once you've hoarded and organised thirty bits of something, you'll have a deeper understanding of the shapes and colours and wonderful uniqueness that can be found anywhere -- in rocks, leaves, sea glass, bottle tops, typography... in anything!

The exercises are inspired by different creative minds, including Leonard Cohen and Tom Robbins, and ask you to try experiencing the world through all of your senses, and documenting it using different writing techniques, photography, sketching exercises, and ways of storing, organising and arranging. Space is provided in the back for limited notes, in a lovely format, which it's possible to copy so that you have unlimited pages.

Keri Smith is, of course, famous for giving you books that you can destroy. This book is slightly different. Yes, you'll want to take it everywhere with you, and there are spaces to tape, glue, doodle and write inside, but this IS a book, not a coaster, not a place mat, not a chew-toy for your dog. It is not another exercise in creativity through wreckage, but explores a different source of inspiration, in the same easy-going, friendly and encouraging tone as all your other favourite Keri Smith books.

I finished the book before realising that I didn't have the next one. Is it out yet? I doubt it. The series is amazing! Plz make, like 5 more. Not to be bossy. I love this series so much I can finish one book in pretty much 5 minutes.

Cute book, but not worth the price.

The books are cute, and my son likes them because they are Pokemon, but definitely not worth the price. These book cost about $2 more than they are worth. Had I know exactly what they were at the time, I would not have bought them all for my son--maybe just one. Too expensive for the value.

Specific chapters include cognitive behavioral and constructivist strategies, emotion-focused strategies, narrative therapy, solution-focused therapy, and adjunctive activities. The final chapter focuses on counselor roles and recommended professional and personal practices.

Great reference tool

This book is a good resource to have on hand for reference in ministry and counseling settings. It is a bit clinical and not an easy read for pleasure, but it is packed with great information that is easily flagged by topic, etc. for quick reference.

Excellent book for your personal clinical library

This book is wonderful providing a full range of counselling interventions and approaches for dealing with Grief. I've used this a lot. I found it really helpful as the book is broken down by theory...so you can get CBT approaches or Solution focused etc. Excellent organized, written and easy to read adn highly useable.

THE Best Grief and Loss Clinical Book

I work with many people grieving a variety of losses, from death to job loss, infidelity, divorce, Friday furloughs, etc. This book is informative and gives current theoretical approaches as well as a plethora of clinical strategies to address client's grief and loss issues. I turn to this book every time I have a client with grief issues.

How to be a billionaire like Warren Buffett? No, but a good way to know the man behind the curtain.

If you want some technical tips on how to be the next Warren Buffet, go grab a copy of Ben Graham's Security Analysis from 1934. But if you want a look at the man Warren Buffett, you have come to the right place. Want to know what kind of family man Buffet is? Want to know how a billionaire treats his children? Or how a young millionaire budgets money to his homemaker wife? Fascinating stuff.

You can also learn about his early career and how he got started, as well as his father the politician and the impact that had.

To many of us Warren Buffet is a billionaire investor who knows the ins and outs of Wall Street way better than most of us. Being a financial celebrity, you would expect to find his whole life online. That though isn’t the case with Warren. Little was known about his personal life until Alice Schroeder wrote this book- The Snowball: Warren Buffet and the Business of Life. Reading through the book you will realize that you don’t have to be successful after everyone else has failed. Warren worked to be where he is currently and was never born with a silver spoon. He is a practical inspiration. As you read along, you will learn that no man is an island and that having a strong support system will go a long way in ensuring you succeed. For example, his associate Charles Munger has been his associate since 1959. It doesn’t have to be the perfect system but rather a unit you can count on.

The book is full of insights and it is by reading it that one will be able to grasp and even apply some of the insights in his/her life. Unlike some autobiographies that are boring to tears, this one is different. There are hilarious snippets after every other chapter and with no time you will complete reading the autobiography and even probably re-read it. It will feel just like the first time you opened the book to read. Alice has also included notes to help you understand the book better.

The title of the book is a metaphor that depicts the ever growing wealth of Warren. The book is lengthy and has a lot of details some of which one may not find necessary but the conversational writing that Alice has employed in penning this book will keep you glued to the book. This is a must read book that walks you through the life of a legend.

A Book for All People

Warren Buffett has interested me for a while now. Of course, everyone knows he is a rich man, but what is interesting is his ability to lead. During my time away, I finished reading this thought provoking book. It is about his life, and his pursuit of wealth and impact in the world. His philosophies are what interests me. He seems to have simple tastes, he has a ethical mindset, though of course, we would probably disagree on some of his stances, but overall, I like his approach to life. I read this book because he has been successful for a long time. What made him not crash and burn like other successful and rich people. The book is interesting because you see his singular focus on understanding businesses and investing. And I believe some of his principles translate to congregational leadership well. One is, trust good people. You have to surround yourself with people who you can trust and are good people. Second, you need to have a bottom to your downside. This is where a lot of churches go wrong. There are changes, but it is too risky, and ultimately fails. Third, be patience, you are not going to get a return quickly, and you need to be patience with people and churches. Fourth, know you will be wrong, but focus on still being right. As leaders, we all make mistakes, but focus not only on the down side, but go for the upside too. There are other lessons that this book dealt with in my context that were helpful too. It is a long read, and it is not a church book, but if you have a interest in this man, and some of his thoughts and background, I truly recommend the book. It was a great read.

Great story, if a bit euphemistic.

I grew up admiring Warren Buffet. I enjoyed this book. It's great story telling about one of the greatest investor of our time. My only issue with this book is it kinda makes Warren out to be a really good guy. Too good. He's a bit of a hypocrite in real life. A bit more balanced story telling perhaps will portray him truer to life.
