Cliff's Notes Version of the Extraordinary Leader

First, I love the Zenger Folkman philosophy on leadership! Second, this easy to read booklet makes it really to understand the philosophy without reading the entire The Extraordinary Leader book. Further it is great to take with you on a plane as it is small and light to carry. I heard Jack Zenger speak and WOW! Good stuff! I've read all of their books on the market. I'm a big fan!

Beautiful story with a valuable life lesson

I bought this book because of the title as a gift for a neighbor child who enjoys watching birds at the feeder between our houses. When it arrived from Amazon, I read through it to ensure it was the right kind of book to give as a gift. It was moving and beautiful. Having recently lost my father, the message of loss and acceptance was bittersweet and definitely drew my tears, making me wonder if it would be an inappropriate gift. But reading this as a child could be the kind of early preparation that could make it easier for people to accept great loss (as well as smaller disappointments) later in life. I remember gaining that kind of value as a child from books like "The Velveteen Rabbit." If that kind of message is something you'd like to expose your kids to gently, this is a wonderful book for that purpose.

More than that, though, it's beautifully illustrated, and the repetition within the story seems like a comforting device for many children.

Beautiful story, great storytelling

This is a beautiful story about a bird that visits a mountain once a year. Both can talk, and they visit with each other. The mountain is lonely. The bird explains she will die someday, that birds don't live long, but promises she will have her daughter visit when she is gone. She explains that she cannot live there as this mountain is barren, so she can visit only once per year. The mountain is lonely when she passes on and cries (a brook begins). The daughter does visit and she drops one seed per year. In the end the mountain is a thriving ecosystem where birds and animals can live year round, nourished by the water that the mountain created.
The book has longer prose than the usual picture books for this age range (more like the picture books published in the 1950s and 1960s). The illustrations are by Eric Carle, interesting and appealing collage format that he is famous for.
This is a tender and touching tale! It is not just a plain picture book prose, it truly is "storytelling".

About the Author

John Goldingay is the David Allan Hubbard Professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary.  He is the author of Old Testament Theology vol. 1 (2003), Walk On (2002), Men Behaving Badly (2000), To the Usual Suspects (1998), After Eating the Apricot (1996), Models for Interpretation of Scripture (1995), and Model for Scripture (1994), as well as commentaries on Daniel and Isaiah.

 

David Allan Hubbard (1928 – 1996), former president and professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, was a recognized biblical scholar. In addition to over 30 books, he has written numerous articles for journals, periodicals, reference works. He was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1996).

Glenn W. Barker (d. 1984) was a general editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 1984). 

John D. W. Watts (1921 – 2013) was President of the Baptist Theological Seminary, Ruschlikon, Switzerland, and served as Professor of Old Testament at that institution, at Fuller Theological Seminary, and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. His numerous publications include commentaries on Isaiah (2 volumes), Amos, and Obadiah. He was Old Testament editor of the Word Biblical Commentary (1977 - 2011).

 

Ralph P. Martin (1925-2013) was Distinguished Scholar in Residence at Fuller Theological Seminary and a New Testament Editor for the Word Biblical Commentary series. He earned the BA and MA from the University of Manchester, England, and the PhD from King's College, University of London. He was the author of numerous studies and commentaries on the New Testament, including Worship in the Early Church, the volume on Philippians in The Tyndale New Testament Commentary series. He also wrote 2 Corinthians and James in the WBC series.

About the Author
Mat Buckland studied Computer Science at London University, then spent many years as a Risk Management Consultant. He went on to work for a developer producing games fro Gremlin Software. Buckland now works as a freelance programmer and AI consultant. He has been interested in evolutionary computing and AI in general since he first read about these techniques back in the early 80¿s. He is the author of the ai-junkie.com web site (www.ai-junkie.com), which provides tutorials and advice on evolutionary algorithms.

Perfect for me

I spent the majority of the time I was reading this book thinking "This is perfect!" Just about every other book of this general type that I have read assumes I know things I don't, is a lot thicker than it needs to be, is much too simple, or is really boring. I don't think the author of this book wasted any pages at all. Everything was put forth in a concise, easy to read tone, and whenever I came across something I hadn't seen before, it was explained in short order. At the same time, he does assume that you know what you're doing, C++ programming-wise, so I didn't have to skip past anything I already knew. For what it's worth, this book created a lot of enthusiasm and confidence in me.
The examples in the book are great. Each chapter takes you through a different small project that helps you to understand what is going on, as well as how it can be applied to games. And, as a bonus, the projects are actually interesting! I really got a kick out of showing my versions of them to people. I was able to code each of them myself in a day or two as I went, but the author's full source code and executables are included if you just want to take a look as you read.
If you are already pretty familiar with windows programming, you probably won't need to read the first two chapters, but they answered a lot of questions for me, and really I felt like the author knew what I was thinking. Later on in the book, there is a review of transforms and matrix math that I found to be a really good reference and refresher.
As a side note, the author wanted to title this book "Genetic Algorithms and Neural Networks for Game Programming," but his publisher didn't think it was 'snappy' enough. He's very active in the forums on his website, and he and others there have been a great help to me.

Not Even Dated in 2010-- Buy It!

I know what you're thinking: Heck, a book published in the early 2000s with reviews in 2005 has to be pretty dated as we look at 2010 and beyond. Wrong! Sure, most AI programmers have moved past Win 32 with numerous new techniques in C++ and Java, and the author's subsequent book (Programming Game AI by Example Programming Game AI by Example) is outstanding in filling in details left out for beginning and intermediate programmers here. However, TGP has all the makings of a classic, and if you miss it, your AI library will have a glaring and lonely hole. Our aeronautic simulation group at xtmh dot com hires numerous fresh grads from quality practical schools like Full Sail as well as quality abstract schools like MIT. What we find is that students who have grounded themselves in Buckland's two books, then evolved by staying up to date with his refresing openness to communication and support, have an outstanding balance of higher math skills (like quadratic programming, tensors and vectors) and practical "biological" agent motivation wisdom. Let's take another example: assume you love game design, but your skill set is in writing, dialog and character development, not MIT-level tensor mapping. Let's also say you've read the wonderful ultimate guide to writing and design (The Ultimate Guide to Video Game Writing and Design [ULTIMATE GT VIDEO GAME WRI -OS]. You are a skillful character, situation and dialog writer and designer, and will likely find a welcome place in supercomputing, the game industry, entertainment, or even the rapidly integrating fields (thank you pixar) of film/TV/gaming. To be successful and at the top of your game, you'll need to communicate your characters' motives, flaws, quests, wins and losses (a lot like real life) to the AI geniuses who will execute your vision in code. BOTH of Dille's books are written at a basic enough level to help you start translating your characterizations into agent behaviors. The opposite also is true-- if you're more of a codie, you'll love opening your mind to thinking at a more agent motivational level, with both time tested and new models of behavior in varying situations. Let's be honest-- the games of 2020 and beyond are all about intelligent agent interaction. The oldest problem in gaming-- how to dumb down a smart hero character enough to make them need a quest, but at the same time not make them look like idiots (stop, I don't want to hear about amnesia), has a corrolary in real life: sure, we could have been made smart enough to know all of life by just hacking our own brain, but God and our own Higher Self User put this odd dichotomy of an unconscious brain able to do array processor and direct geometric tensor mapping-- basically matrix calculus of partial derivatives-- something no supercomputer can do yet (we still have to convert geometric matrices and tensors to numeric models for processing even in supercomputers)-- when doing as simple an act as crossing a street in traffic; with a "conscious" brain that sometimes has trouble with four function math! If you need to figure out the paradox of dumbing down a genius in your character development, and the dicotomy seems too far fetched-- simply check out your average friend, or look in the mirror! Is this a digression? Nope-- we're just hinting at how cool a combination you will be able to imagine if you combine your study of data structures and algorithms with the now well established multi agent AI techniques. A hint at the future: we're finding clients as sophisticated as NASA and Los Alamos looking for new models of AFFECTIVE programming right now. Meaning, characters that not only learn and think as they move through your sims, but also are motivated by that other squishy reality-- heart. So the critics who think Buckland is out of date or too simple-- map your tensor into another frame of reference-- that of bridging code with biological and emotional motivation-- and you'll see why the most interesting games, sims and even real life "models" of cellular and synaptic structure and function need BOTH high level math and fun and interesting situational behaviors for the best games, and lives.

Not What I Expected, But Still a Worthy Addition to Fallen Series

I know a lot of readers are extremely torn about whether or not to read this book. I was torn too at first because even though I always felt Cam got the short end of the stick in the last book, I also didn't understand why, after all this time, Lauren Kate was choosing now to revisit the Fallen world. But in the end, my love for Cam won out and I realized I had to read this book. While it wasn't exactly what I was expecting, I did enjoy the novel a lot and think fans of the series will too. The story was a pretty quick read and the pacing of the novel was good. There wasn't much action except at the end, but the conclusion made the book worthwhile. There were some things I couldn't get over, and because of that I had to reduce my rating by a star, but I do think this is a must-read for fans of the Fallen series.

After finding out that Lilith, the mortal Cam fell in love with oh so long ago, is living in constant cycles of Hell, he literally makes a deal with the Devil and has 15 days to convince Lilith that he loves her and she loves him. You should be warned that this is not the same Cam we knows from the rest of the series. And to me, this is one of the downfalls of this novel. While Cam is still Cam in certain ways, and different in others, I just kept expecting a bit more from him. Obviously, his bad-boy, brooding ways weren't going to work in winning over Lilith, but he lost some of the characteristics that made me fall in love with his character in the beginning. I did greatly enjoy Lilith's character. She's tough, and I loved watching her transformation over the course of the story. However, the constant drama between her and Cam did become a bit tedious while reading, and I could have done without some of it. Regardless, I did love Lilith and Cam as a couple, especially when they first met because she wasn't swayed like the typical girls Cam surrounded himself with. She had a lot of sass and was feisty, and I loved it!

One aspect of the story that I really enjoyed was the flashbacks to Cam and Lilith's life when they met the first time in Canaan. Lauren Kate shows exactly what happened between the characters and how their history shaped their characters in the present. The little interludes where we saw these flashbacks was a great way for the reader to learn more about Cam and Lilith's past, and I thought it was a unique way for Ms. Kate to go about revealing their story.

Overall, the story wasn't exactly what I was expecting, and I did want more from Cam's story, but for the most part it was a very enjoyable read that I think will please most fans of the Fallen series. The ending is kind of left open, but it ends nicely, and it was nice for Cam to have his story all tied up.

Hugely Disappointed - not up to Lauren's usual standard

I'm breaking my own self-imposed rule by posting this 2-star review (I normally don't post unless it's 3 stars or above) but I have to make an exception on this occasion as I am so incensed after reading this book.

I'll start by saying that I'm not an uber-Fallen fan, but I did mostly enjoy the series despite the glaring plotholes and unanswered questions. I'm actually dying to see the movie when it comes out next year and I love love love Daniel Grigori. I immediately pre-ordered this book when Lauren announced the details as I was always intrigued by Cam. I thought - great, we will finally get some answers to some of the questions I had regarding his backstory and possibly an insight into what did happen with him and Luce (if anything) in the past.

What we got instead was a lame, lazy, quite obviously rushed, juvenile piece of storytelling. The blurb pretty much sums up the entire book. Honestly, there is not much more to it than that.

The only reason this is not a 1-star review is down to Lauren Kate's writing. I actually really enjoy her writing and happen to think she's very talented, and I know she can deliver better quality than this. Part of my frustration stems from this, however, the main issues were lack of worldbuilding, character development, and a plot which was practically non-existent.

And don't even get me started on Cam. This was NOT Cam. Cam, as presented in the other books, is a bad-boy with a penchant for trouble, a serious snarky mouth, and a vulnerability that he tries his best to hide. Deep-down inside, he is a good guy, and we see that through his friendships with all the other fallen angels, and his belief in their quest, despite the risks. Underneath it all, I've always suspected he just wants to be loved. In this book, he was a total watered-down version of himself, a complete and utter sap, with no backbone and minimal personality.

Lucifer was like a one-dimensional caricature of Satan. Plastering posters with stolen song lyrics around the school - seriously, Lucifer, is that the best you could come up with??

When I happened across the first Interlude, I got very excited at the prospect of discovering Lillith and Cam's original love story, but it was totally glossed over, and it was at that point that I felt like throwing my Kindle at the wall.

There was little romance either in the telling of their original love story, or the current attempt to re-win her heart, and I felt zero chemistry between them. I can't get behind a love story that just isn't credible in the slightest.

I have tons more I could say, but I'm going to leave it there. Not impressed, enough said. I suspect there are more books to come. I, for one, will not be reading them.

Not as good as fallen but still good

First thing that got me is that this book dose not have the same punch as Fallen. The connection between Cam and Lilith is not as deep as Daniel and Luncinda. It still a good story and it ties some loose ends up from Fallen.Guess I thought the story would a bit deeper than it is.

Comprehensive Easy Guide Worth reading - highly recommend buying

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The book covered everything from basic information on how Google works to taking you on a journey through the technical steps of marketing a business in the search results. I finished this book in less than 24 hours and wrote a lot of notes and highlighted several important factors to revisit. After finishing the book, I immediately worked with my Web Site Developer on the results to improve my business. I have already started utilizing many of the pointers I picked up in the book and already see results in less than a week. I was appreciative of the external resources and specific techniques I can put to use. The book is practical and easy to understand - it covers everything
for beginners to advanced levels. Highly recommend purchasing this book - you won't be disappointed.

Powerful handbook for any business owner or marketer to have!

I did a lot of research before finally settling on this book. It's thoroughly researched and well put together. The author makes complicated concepts easy to understand. He also touches on advanced tactics so experienced readers will walk away with at least a handful of new tactics. The author does this while making it fun, it feels like you have a good friend explaining the whole process.

This is a powerful resource not just on SEO but for growing a business. It covers all the essential information on SEO, also covers local marketing and even pay-per-click campaigns. Some areas are covered, but looks like this was on purpose, everything is easy to understand and it doesn't make you fall asleep like reading an encyclopedia.

My only complaint, I would have liked more information in the section about analytics. It covers general information on this, I would have liked more detail on knowing where to pay attention after improving my rankings and traffic.

I've seen lots of businesses do well with SEO and I've seen lots of businesses struggle because they don't understand SEO and neither does their SEO guy, so I think it's important to get the right knowledge. Anyone with this guide on their desk will inevitably find it an essential resource they will refer to on a weekly or maybe even daily basis. Highly recommend this book to anyone that wants the best all-round-guide on SEO and grow their business.

SEO 2016: Search Engine Optimization at its Best

Search engine optimization is demystified and finally made simple and easy to understand in this book. It has a lot of information from core essentials to advanced strategies. It does get technical in some areas, but the author balances this out with his conversational style. It covers the latest RankBrain, Mobile and Penguin updates and I couldn't find this information in other books, so I give the author bonus points for covering this new information.
