This book describes the hybrid approach to modelling forest ecosystems and their possible response to natural and management-induced disturbance. The book describes the FORECAST family of ecosystem management models at three different spatial scales (tree, stand and landscape), and compares them with alternative models at these three spatial scales.

The book will help forest managers to understand what to expect from ecosystem-based forest models; serve as a tool for use in teaching about sustainability, scenario analysis and value trade-offs in natural resources management; and assist policy makers, managers and researches working in assessment of sustainable forest management and ecosystem management. Several real-life examples of using the FORECAST family of models in forest management and other applications are presented from countries including Canada, China, Spain and the USA, to illustrate the concepts described in the text. The book also demonstrates how these models can be extended for scenario and value trade-off analysis through visualization and educational or management games.

About the Author

Hamish Kimmins: Following an undergraduate degree in Forestry from the University of Wales and an M.Sc. in Forest Entomology from the University of California at Berkeley, Dr. Kimmins, received his PhD in Forest Ecology at Yale University, focusing on the relationship between ecosystem function and herbivore population dynamics. Since 1969 he has been a Professor of Forest Ecology at the University of British Columbia, Canada, where he has presented courses on forest ecology, ecosystem classification, ecological aspects of silviculture, environmental issues in forestry, ecosystem function and response to disturbance, and modelling forest ecosystems to undergraduates, graduate students and professional foresters. He has developed and until recently tutorsed a UBC web-based Distance Education course in Forest Ecology. For the past thirty three years, Dr. Kimmins has worked to develop ecologically-based forest ecosystem management models, from the spatially-explicit, individual tree stand model FORCEE, to the a-spatial stand model FORECAST, to the spatial, local landscape, complex disturbance patch model LLEMS, and the spatial watershed ecosystem management model POSSIBLE FOREST FUTURES. These models range from a high school education forest management game (FORTOON), to decision support and research tools, to scenario analysis and value trade-off assessment tools. He is currently an emeritus professor after holding a Senior Canada Research Chair in Modelling the Sustainability of Forest Ecosystems, and is Director of the Forest Ecosystem Management Modelling Group in the Department of Forest Sciences. Dr. Kimmins is a former member of UNESCO's World Commission on the Ethics of Science and Technology (COMEST) and serves on many science advisory boards.

Juan A. Blanco: Dr. Blanco studied Agricultural Engineering at the Public University of Navarra, Spain. He was awarded a Ph.D. in Forest Ecology from the Public University in 2004, for his examination of the influence of forest management on nutrient cycles in pine forests of the Pyrenees. He has published several papers and book chapters on this topic. In 2003, he also collaborated with the team from the Technical University of Oruro to study environmental issues in the Uru-Uru Lake, Bolivia. He then moved to Vancouver, where he is currently a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Forest Sciences, University of British Columbia. His work is centered on the use of ecological forest models for developing and assessing long-term sustainable forest management practices, a subject on which he has published several papers in international journals. He is currently collaborating in Canada, Spain, Cuba and China in research projects to assess the long-term sustainability of forest management with ecological models.

Brad Seely: Dr. Seely was awarded a Ph.D. in terrestrial ecology from the Department of Biology at Boston University in 1996. He then worked as a Postdoctoral Fellow with Hamish Kimmins in the Forest Ecosystem Management Simulation group at UBC, developing the FORECAST and LLEMS models. Presently, he is a Research Associate in the Department of Forest Sciences at UBC where he develops and tests forest ecosystem management models at multiple spatial scales. His specific interests lie in the development and application of process-based models of stand growth and development. He has also conducted research and developed models to examine the interactions between forest management, site productivity, hydrologic processes, carbon sequestration and climate change.

Clive Welham: Dr. Welham was awarded his B.Sc. (1983) and M.Sc. (1986) degrees from the University of Manitoba, and his Ph.D. (1993) from Simon Fraser University, in Vancouver. His academic career began with an emphasis on evolutionary ecology and ecological modeling. Following a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Botany Department at UBC, he joined the Forest Ecosystem Management Simulation Group, in the Department of Forest Sciences, to which he still belongs. His work at UBC is principally concerned with forest ecosystem model development, testing and validation, at spatial scales from the individual tree to the landscape. Specific interests include ecosystem reclamation, carbon dynamics, and climate change. Clive also teaches a graduate level course in ecosystem modeling, and occasional undergraduate courses.

Kim Scoullar: Mr. Scoullar is a professional programmer with more than 35 years of experience developing code for ecosystem models. He was the main developer of the FORCYTE series of models commissioned under the Energy from the Forest (ENFOR) project by the Government of Canada. Mr. Scoullar has developed educational software (FORTOON) and software for forest management and research (FORECAST, LLEMS, FORCEE). He is also collaborating in the development of CALP-Forester.

An excellent book that gives a professional overview on forest modeling practices and modeling tools; both on stand-level and landscape-level. In ecosystem modeling it is always important to keep up with technology and this book provides insight into some more advance methodologies that we have in the 21st century.

About the Author

He does this by writing books, conducting workshops, and speaking internationally about the power of brand, innovation, and design. How to Become a "Brand Gap Guru"

This is an expanded edition of a book first published in 2003. In it, Neumeier develops in greater depth several basic ideas about how to bridge a gap between business strategy and design. My own experience suggests that on occasion, there may be a conflict or misalignment rather than a "gap." Or the business strategy is inappropriate. Or the design concepts are wrong-headed. Or the execution fails. Whatever, Neumeier correctly notes that "A lot of people talk about it. Yet very few people understand it. Even fewer know how to manage it. Still, everyone wants it. What is it? Branding. of course -- arguably the most powerful business tool since the spreadsheet." What Neumeier offers is a "30,000-foot view of brand: what it is (and isn't), why it works (and doesn't), and most importantly, how to bridge the gap between logic and magic to build a sustainable competitive advantage." Of course, that assumes that both logic and magic are present and combined...or at least within close proximity of each other.

As others have already indicated, Neumeier provides a primer ("the least amount of information necessary") rather than a textbook. His coverage is not definitive, nor intended to be. He has a crisp writing style, complemented by "the shorthand of the conference room" (i.e. illustrations, diagrams, and summaries). Some describe his book an "easy read" but I do not. When reading short and snappy books such as this one, I have learned that certain insights resemble depth charges or time capsules: they have a delayed but eventually significant impact. For example, Neumeier explains why "Three Little Questions" can bring a high-level marketing meeting to a screeching halt:

1. Who are you?

2. What do you do?

3. Why does it matter?

I also want to express my admiration of the book's design features. They create an appropriate visual context within which Neumeier examines each of five "Disciplines": differentiation, collaboration, innovation, validation, and cultivation. Expect no head-snapping revelations. For many of those who read this book, its greatest value will will be derived from reiteration of certain core concepts which Neumeier reviews with uncommon clarity and concision. Check out the "Take-Home Lessons" (pages 149-157) which include

"A brand is a person's gut feeling about a product, service, or company. It's not what you say it is. It's what THEY say it is."

When reading business books, I much prefer annotated bibliographies such as Neumeier's to mere lists. For whatever reasons, many provide neither.

The design of the book speaks for itself.

I came across this book on a list of recommendations. Once it arrived, I flipped through it briefly and was impressed by how terrible—absolutely terrible—the design was. But it was recommended, so I didn't dismiss it. I should have. A book on brand (which argues that design is critical to building brand) that is so terribly deficient in design is not worth your time. I slogged through every single page to affirm that conclusion. Entirely on the strength of a recommendation, I soldiered on, searching desperately for some justification for the book's existence. It never came. Save yourself the time.

Excellent introduction into the field

This book does an excellent job outlining the theoretical background and applications of geostatistics. After an overview and explanation of a concept (often involving some mathematical notation) the authors drop back and give an "intuitive" approach to the subject that I find incredibly beneficial.
I am a self-taught student of geostats, and this book is my tutor. While I would prefer some formal instruction to augment this text, the text is excellent and a must-read for any student of the field.

Very good introduction to Geostatistics

This book is an excellent introduction to the somewhat difficult field of geostatistics. The examples in the book are based on the analysis of a digital elevation model transformed into data variables. This approach works very well and the explanatory text is very readable and understandable. Initially I thought that the math would make difficult reading but I am pleased to be wrong. The basics of Geostatistics can be understood from this book without having to translate the formulae ! An alternative very quick introduction to Geostatistics may be found in Burrough and McDonnell - Principles of Geographical Information Systems pp 132-161. My background is in Geology & GIS.

A must-have for all neuro-nerds !

Neurology, being a branch of medicine that is deeply rooted in tradition - particularly European - authors of clinical examination textbooks in neurology fall prey to the temptation of producing essays, forgetting that their typical audience picks up the book hoping to "learn" something rather than bask in the sunshine that is the authors' wisdom. DeMyer's Textbook, though not aimed at the medical student planning a quick pre-exam review of things, certainly steers clear of that temptation. Though packed with information (a discussion on Babinski's plantar reflex sign takes up 4 pages, for eg.), the editors have taken care to break down the text matter to suit the modern reader - I mean the one that, while skimming through a book on the couch, has 5 different browser tabs opened up on the laptop and a chat-window in the corner of the phone - yes the one with ADHD.

The monotony of the text matter is broken by self-test "fill-the-blanks" questions, often about the stuff you just read two or three lines ago, and the answers are given just to the left-hand margin in the same page. Chapters are organized in numbered subsections and bullet-points, which makes every line an important factoid. Images are easy to recall and the suggested exercises ("try to draw the figures from memory") are interesting (yes, sometimes childish, but I can't argue with the effectiveness!). Instead of "lecturing" on clinical exam, the book walks you through ways of testing stuff on yourself or a study-mate, which I am sure would be fun, if you were to actually read this 600+ page book in medical school! The illustrations are also accompanied by instructions on dissecting the brain, so I presume this was written for first-year med students to go along with their neuranatomy clerkship as well.

I was astonished to see medical history and a bit of philosophy as well sprinkled throughout this book, which for all purposes is quintessentially American - practice-driven and unconventional in all other respect. The chapter on special senses start with Aristotle (again bullet-points, remember !), walks you through Sherrington and then quickly dives into the present. The section on hallucinations quotes from Macbeth ("Is this a dagger I see before me....") and even Dostoyevsky ! May be it is a whimsical attempt to reconnect to the European traditions.

The bibliographic references follow each section, which is a neat way to organise it. This is among the very few textbooks that I have seen that discuss the "summation effect" that is required to elicit a clean Babinski plantar reflex, the Full Outline of UnResponsiveness (FOUR Scale devised by Wijdicks et al.) and the embryology of dermatomes and cranial nerves, all in with clinical perspective and not just for the sake of cramming the book.

About the Author
David Nieman is a professor of health and exercise science, and director of the Human Performance Lab at Appalachian State University in North Carolina. His research focus during the past twenty years has been exercise immunology, with a secondary emphasis on sports nutrition, obesity, aging, and nutritional assessment. Dr. Nieman has more than 200 peer-reviewed publications in journals and books and is a member of eight journal editorial boards including his role as a section editor for Mosby’s YearBook of Sports Medicine. He is the author of nine books on exercise, nutrition, and health. Dr. Nieman sits on the medical advisory board for the Bally Total Fitness Corporation, served two terms as president of the International Society of Exercise and Immunology, and was elected as a basic and applied science trustee for the American College of Sports Medicine. Dr. Nieman has run 58 marathons and ultramarathons, and was an acrobatic gymnast and coach for 10 years. His marathon PR is 2:37, and he has run the Pikes Peak Marathon twice, with a 16th place finish.

As I wrote the preface for this tenth edition of Introductory Circuit Analysis, it was impossible not to reflect over the past 34 years of its history. There were times when it was particularly difficult to be sure which subjects were outdated, whether a new topic should be added, whether a presentation was at the correct level or too mathematically complex, whether the computer coverage should be expanded, and so on. Fortunately, however, students' questions in class and in laboratory sessions, combined with comments from peers and reviewers, helped define the areas to be reworked and the subjects to 'be, added. Nonetheless, in my desire to please everyone, the book grew in size to the point where I seriously considered dropping sections and even whole chapters. However, the reaction to such a change was so negative that it seemed that the best alternative was simply to accept the fact that any new material could be considered only if a similar amount of content was deleted.

It is always interesting that as I sit down to write the preface for one edition, I am already aware of changes that will appear in the next edition. For example, in the area of computers for this edition, I felt a strong need to maintain the detailed descriptions that appear with the applications of PSpice, Mathcad, and Electronics Workbench. However, the quality of the supporting literature has improved significantly in recent years, leading me to believe that most of the detail will be dropped from the eleventh edition, with possibly only the output files or printouts provided. One of the most enjoyable challenges for me with each new edition is to come up with something innovative that will support the learning process. In the ninth edition it was the addition of numerous practical examples, and in the eighth edition it was the detail to support the Windows version of PSpice. Going back to the fifth edition (1987), I can recall debating whether to introduce computer analysis to the text with the addition of BASIC programs. Obviously, it was the right move when we consider the coverage that such analysis receives in most texts today. In another edition it was the expansion of the early chapter on mathematical operations, as I found that many students lacked the proper background for the work to follow. Revision is a continuing process that provides a wonderful challenge for future editions.

The most obvious changes for this edition are in the computer area. I was pleased with OrCAD's family release of the 9.2 Lite Edition, allowing me to move on from Version 8. I can recall when I finally became confident in the use of the DOS version of PSpice, and then the Windows version was introduced. I realized that although I had developed my skills in the DOS mode, I had to learn this new approach. At first I was reluctant and took pains to point out everything I didn't like about the Windows version. However, with exposure and time, I recognized that it was obviously the way of the future; and now, of course, I welcome the change. The same was true to some extent when I became familiar with Version 8 of PSpice and then Version 9 (under new ownership) was introduced with a number of changes. There was a period where I simply stayed with Version 8 rather than make the change. However, Cadence Design Systems has made a significant effort to soften the changes and bring back its close association with the MicroSim version. The time has come to move on to the new version. Most of the changes are in the front end and in some of the simulation sequences. Be assured, however, that if you are familiar with Version 8 and you take a few minutes to review the introductory material in this text, the new version will soon be as user-friendly as the old. In fact, you will probably appreciate some of the changes that were made.

For this edition the Multisim 2001 version of Electronics Workbench was added in response to its expanded use by a number of institutions. It has the distinct advantage of permitting the use of actual instruments to make the measurements, giving students a laboratory experience using the computer.

Finally, I decided to let Mathcad play an active role in the learning process. Students today are so quick to learn how to apply software packages that I felt the ability to perform complex mathematical operations with the computer would only entice students to become more familiar with computer methods. I can recall years ago when students would sit in awe when I showed them how to perform some basic operations with a computer. Today, I have to be constantly on my toes to keep up with the questions they ask, and, admittedly, I sometimes have to do some research before I can answer them properly.

The coverage of C++ remains the same in response to positive comments from current users. However, with the addition of Electronics Workbench, and based on some comments received from reviewers, I decided to remove the BASIC programs and their descriptions.

Through recent years I have received numerous comments about the order of the last few chapters of the book. This time I took a close look at the content and decided that some of the recommended changes were valid and should be made. I must admit, however, that the new order is primarily a result of my own teaching experience and the order in which I feel the topics should be covered in an introductory text. The order of the numbered sections in Chapter 12 ("Inductors") was also changed to ensure that the most important topics were covered first and that the use of the general equation for transient behavior was presented earlier so that it could be used throughout the chapter.

Other noticeable changes include deletion of material surrounding the introduction of superconductors because the descriptions required a background beyond the students' current level. Also, the term rms is now used almost exclusively rather than eff as in past editions. In the description of phasor algebra, the letters A, B, and C were replaced by X, Y, and Z to provide a bridge between the mathematical operations and the network parameters. In Chapter 10 on capacitors, the general equation for transient behavior is introduced earlier to permit its use throughout the chapter. In fact, it is now used throughout Chapter 24 so that students do not have to refer to the basic defining equations presented earlier.

The CD-ROM enclosed with this textbook contains 96 circuit files provided in both Electronics Workbench Version 5 and Multisim, as well as an enhanced Textbook Edition of Multisim.

I am very pleased with the reaction to the extensive changes made in the last edition of the laboratory manual. I'm sure that the positive reaction was partially due to the fact that the standard protoboard can now be used to set up the circuits because of the change to 1/4-W resistors. The new laboratory experiment on potentiometers was also a standout in the reviewers' comments. Minor changes were made, but in general the laboratory experiments are the same as in the last edition.

What do you expect for $13.

The order showed up quickly and packaged well. The cover binding did have a small tear in it, but nothng a little tape wouldn't fix. My biggest issue is that the book reeks of mothballs. Its been a couple of weeks and it still does. I can't put it in my backpack or my backpack ends up stinking for days. But, it was $13...I can't really complain that much.

.....definitely a "late night dinner crowd" coffee table book. Guest don't get brave enough to pick up and/or comment on until after a round of after dinner drinks.....then the real commentary comes to light and discussion. Sure to be an attention getter for one's more enlightened dinner guest.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself... I grew up in Central Jersey, and studied Theatre Arts and English at Monmouth University. (Going to college right next to the beach? does senia have any backbone?

I was disappointed because the heroine of this book seemed to just lay back and let her family contradict what she done. Finally toward the end she grew some "lady balls" and slapped her brother. (Should have happened way earlier) this story line didn't keep me interested enough to purchase the 3rd book. It's in my wish list in case I just have nothing else to read.... But y'all know how that goes. Always something else to read! :)

Why do I get sucked in???

I hate these mini novels. This book was not as good as the first one. Again we are left with a huge cliffhanger, only this time I will not take the bait. After reading the reviews for book three and finding out that there is yet another book coming, I have decided I am DONE!!

THE RACY RIDE CONTINUES

Harrison and Siena continue to keep their relationship under wraps, but someone is sending photos of them to her phone. As the next big race approaches, the cat is let out of the bag when photos are sent to Enzo's phone right before the big race. What happens next brings the whole story out in the open. Siena is torn between Her love of family and the strong pull she feels about Harrison. Harrison wins out when Siena follows him to London for some R and R, mostly hot sex. Then the love fest comes to a head when Siena opens the door to get the newspaper and is bombarded with flash bulbs in her face, BUSTED!!!!!! Now on to Book 3.
