Board Stiff 3 oral board review

Excellent book, well written, good scenarios. Would still recommend oral board review course, but this is a great start, as is Board Stiff Too. Have heard great things about Dr. HO's oral board review, but have not attended one yet. Also know that Dr. Gallagher has a live oral board review course, but no information on the quality. Have to think, based on his books, that the live course would also be very well done.
Dr. Gallgher has authored/co-arthured several anesthesiology books. I don't have the first Board Stiff book, but I do have Board Stiff Too and Board Stiff Three. Both are excellent; very informative, great suggestions and considerations for study, and simultaneously entertaining.
Board Stiff Three has a DVD as well. Laughing out loud as you study actually helps me retain the information. Highly recommend this book and anything by this author (Chris Gallagher). Dr. Gallagher is an attending anesthesiologist at a highly respected program. I've heard he has been "Teacher of the Year." I wonder if Dr. Gallagher is as terrific in person, as in print.

A must have for Anesthesia Oral Boards!

It took me more than 1-2 attempts at Oral boards to find out about this book and it's unbelievable value. Anybody who is preparing for orals have to review this book a few times. Don't be fooled by its simplistic approach. It is very practical. I tried other "famous" oral board reveiw courses and after passing the Orals believe Board stiff's approach is THE way to go! I also took Board stiff live and recommend it to everyone. Again, having been to other "famous" courses, BSL was THE best...

Gallagher is fun but book is shoddy

While I enjoy Gallagher's great sense of humor, the book itself is the bigger joke. Entire chapters are copied and pasted from handouts the author makes for residents without any editing whatsoever. And this is the third edition. I can't imagine how slipshod the first edition must have looked. The example answers submitted by his contributors do everything wrong. Rather then properly edit them into helpful examples, the author just adds asides that say, "Don't do it like this." Seriously? One sample board response included text lifted from 6 different papers. Most of the cases are ridiculous and the explanations are even worse, though they are fun to read. The last third of the book is difficult cases without explanations. I wish I'd bought something else. If a new CA1's wrote an oral board review book and self-published it in his/her garage, it would be better than this.

Childhood dreams of adventure

I read this book as a child and have never forgotten it. Wrapped up snugly in my warm bed in England, having imaginary adventures in far off Canada. I also remember a further book called Son of Kazan. I have searched many times over the years to find either of these books, I am now 56 years old , and I am grateful to Amazon for making them accessable to me, I was beginning to think I would would never find them. I highly recommend Kazan to any child for an exciting and stimulating read.

A timeless tale!

An exciting and deeply moving story, Kazan is a must-read for anyone who loves and appreciates animals and nature. They story is told mainly through the eyes of Kazan, a dog who is one-quarter wolf, and this point of view truly enhances the sense of adventure. I felt an instant kinship with the author even though the story was originally written in 1914.

This book was recommended by my Dutch mother-in-law who loved the story as a young girl. It is a wondeful tale of animal and human, and teaches that we truely need each other to survivie. I enjoyed this more than any other man/wolf stories Ivé ever read.

In the Maoist movement's peasant-based, military path to power, he perceives the roots of many characteristics of post-1949 China--for example, the close interlocking of party and army, repeated attacks on intellectuals, and mass political campaigns. Lieberthal credits Deng Xiaoping of the late 1970s and early '80s as an innovative reformer, an improvisational genius who effected a conscious reduction in the government's control of social and economic activity. This engrossing text also provides an amazingly detailed blueprint of modern China's power elite, their propaganda and coercive systems. Lieberthal, an adviser to the State Department and the World Bank, details the clash of China's new generation of technocrats and its stagnant gerontocracy as he discusses such issues as political succession, managing the economy and limiting environmental damage. Kenneth Lieberthal is Distinguished Fellow and Director for China at the William Davidson Institute, University of Michigan. A Fabulous First Look

Chinese politics is incredibly tricky. We tend to think of Mao and Deng so dominating this nation that we forget that no one, not even Mao, can rule 1 billion people without a bureaucracy. I agree with the review below that someone trying to look in depth at a topic in Chinese politics will not be satisfied with this work. That's not its point, though. This and Baum's Burying Mao are two books that a reasonably intelligent reader can read on their own in order to get the basics. This does not deal much with international policy or with explicit comparisons between the Soviet and Chinese states. However, Lieberthal lays out clearly the ministries, their responsibilities and what happened when Mao, in his staggeringly limited vision, decided to bypass the massive structures that made the nation work.
Though limited temporally, this sets the stage for the rise of the Chinese Communists and works allows a reader, without wading through too much minutae, to understand what it was that Mao set out to accomplish, how much Deng undid, and what was actually set into motion within the Party and government when these two historical giants flung the nation at a new idea.

Great book--new edition reportedly in the works

This book is a great introduction to the topic, but is becoming somewhat dated for those who are looking for analysis of the past five years. Lieberthal was busy guiding Clinton's China policy on the National Security Council--no time for writing. Reportedly he has begun work on a new edition.

Dense, readable, academic account of early 90's Chinese politics

Lieberthal is well known, but his analysis here stands apart from his name.

This book is now ~20 years old, but anyone following modern political events in China will spot the changes quickly. The book's value is that it provides a level of detail a few rungs below what Western journalists typically communicate, and even a level below what Chinese sources like Caijing and Caixin deal with.

Also Lieberthal informs the reader about various perspectives on Chinese politics, such as the argument that modern Chinese politics bears many cultural similarities with ancient politics. You may disagree, but regardless this kind of information is required for literacy on the topic.

This book is a work of political science and China studies. It is useful for undergrad or graduate students who tire of hearing glossy generalizations about China's political system and its operation. For non-academic readers (e.g. those with business interest or casual China-watchers), this book is less useful than some others (e.g. Shih's "Factions and Finance") because of it will not give a clear idea of how economic policy-making works.
